Savage Gulf Backpacking Campout (13-15 November)
The dates are November 13–15. We will have both long and short hike options, so Scouts of different ages and experience levels are encouraged to attend. This is a great opportunity for Scouts who are new to backpacking to give it a try, whi
le our more experienced Scouts can take on a longer and more challenging trek.
Scouts new to backpacking will hike about 4 miles along the Stone Door and Big Creek Rim trails to the Alum Gap campsite. Along the way, they’ll get some great views and explore the famous Great Stone Door. There will also be an optional hike to Greeter Falls on Saturday afternoon. The route on slide 2 of the flyer is the short hike option.
Experienced Scouts will have the option of a roughly 10-mile trek that heads down through the Great Stone Door and into the canyon along the Big Creek Gulf Trail, with lunch at Ranger Falls. Both groups will meet back at Alum Gap and spend Saturday night together as a Troop. Sunday’s hike back to the vehicles is less than 3 miles.
This should be a great weekend of hiking, camping, and getting out on the trail together. Whether your Scout has never carried a backpack overnight or is ready for a serious trek, we want to see them there.
