Our November trip will be a challenging backpacking adventure in the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park. Because the backcountry camping sites limit the number of campers, we will divide into groups and hike in crews of twelve people each. Everyone will climb over 1500 feet and meet Requirement 9b (parts 1 and 2) of the Camping Merit Badge. Scouts working on Second Class will also have a great chance to complete navigation requirements 3a and 3b.

I will offer practice hikes in October to get the scouts used to hiking with packs on. I’m tentatively planning on hikes around Rainbow Mountain on Sunday, Oct 21 and Saturday, Oct 27. I’ll send another email with the times for each hike. Be prepared to attend each hike packed for the trail as best you can. I’ll bring scales to weigh everyone’s pack and we can talk about gear on the trail.

Regarding gear, Mr. Hauser will be sending an email with recommendations soon. Mitch plans to teach about backpacking gear this month, and I will be available to answer questions via email and on the practice hikes.
